These wonderful crafted horn Thumb Rings are used for protecting the thumb when using an `Asiatic grip`, this is when your thumb hooks around the bowstring just beneath the arrow and braced with the first finger, as shown in the image. The string sits on a groove, again as seen in the image. Other names for this type of draw/release are "Mongolian release" and "Mongolian draw".
